Gordon agreed to run in 2000 so the party could say they had a candidate in every riding. It was a leap upon the sword, a Pyrrhic victory. He was up against a parachute candidate who would be later sued for not paying off on the financial arrangement that lead to the sitting MP's discussion to resign, causing the by-election. That the parachute candidate was the leader of the opposition made the results a forgone conclusion. Within a year, Canadians came to Mr. Seiter's way of thinking and the successful candidate was ousted from his leadership roll.
